Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017, and quickly became the most streamed song within six months. In 2017, the single Despacito, which combines pop music with reggaeton was not only a way to bring new interest to reggaeton but also sparked interest in Latin music. The Billboard Top 100 featured two songs which were Spanish mostly, and four in the year 2016. The Despacito song was at its peak popularity in 2017 however 19 predominantly Spanish songs made it to the top 100, and in 2020 there were 41 songs. Justin Bieber re-mixed Despacito with a Spanish version in 2017 shortly after which popular artists began working with reggaeton acts. Drake teamed with Bad Bunny to create MIA (2018) as well as Madonna worked on Medellin together with Maluma (2019). By 2020 a few reggaeton artists were expressing displeasure at the genre's direction toward the mainstream but a new generation namely Rauw Alejandro was determined to ensure that reggaeton was evolving. Incorporating elements of electronic dance music, as well as other styles was a common practice.
